Prep Softball Roundup : Marina Scores Twice in 8th to Beat Ocean View

Designated hitter Julie Muche singled in the winning run in the top of the eighth inning and Marina High School went on to beat Ocean View, 2-0, in a Sunset League softball game Tuesday at Ocean View.

The victory ties Marina (13-8, 3-2) with Edison for second place in the league behind Fountain Valley (4-1).

The teams played to a scoreless tie through seven innings. In the eighth, catcher Christa Yorke singled and Sandra Ross walked. Both runners advanced on Marla Pickard’s wild pitch before Muche drove in Yorke. Annie Presutti hit a slow grounder to second to score Ross.

Ocean View threatened to score in the bottom of the eighth after Marina committed two errors to put Ocean View runners on first and third with no outs. After two unsuccessful sacrifice bunts, Willa Parchen (12-6) intentionally walked Pickard to load the bases then struck out Jena Sansone to end the game. Parchen pitched a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts for Marina.

In other Sunset League games:

Edison 3, Westminster 2--Jamey Crider went two for three and knocked in the winning RBI in the sixth for Edison (6-13, 3-2) at Westminster (1-4 in league play).

Fountain Valley 1, Huntington Beach 0 (10 innings)--Shannon Harrison singled home Paula Estes in the 10th inning for Fountain Valley (15-4-1, 4-1). Rae Rice (6-2) gave up five hits and struck out 16 in the victory. Huntington Beach is 2-3 in league play.

In the Angelus League:

Mater Dei 1, Bishop Montgomery 0--Amy Moeller and Tina Fuata and Amy Godwin singled to load the bases in the bottom of the fourth before shortstop Rose Imbriano hit a fielder’s choice to second base to score Moeller. Mater Dei is 14-4-2, 4-1-1. Bishop Montgomery is 11-10, 1-5.

St. Paul 5, Rosary 0--Rosary (8-9, 2-4) committed four errors in a loss at St. Paul (14-7-1, 4-1-1). Keri Kropke (13-3-1) pitched a one-hitter for St. Paul.

In the Century League:

Canyon 11, Santa Ana 1 (5 innings)--Chanele Chambrone hit a two-run single in the first and Traci Himes went two for three with two RBIs. Canyon (13-8, 4-1) broke the game open with a six-run fourth inning. Santa Ana is 5-13, 1-4.

Foothill 9, Santa Ana Valley 6--Shannon Ebert went three for three including a triple for Foothill (12-10, 3-2). Santa Ana Valley is 0-5 in league play.

Villa Park 5, El Modena 4--Villa Park scored three runs in the bottom of the first to erase a 2-0 deficit at Villa Park (12-10, 5-0). Stephanie Wills had a two-run double in the inning. Andi Jensen had a two-run single in the second to give Villa Park a 5-2 lead.

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 2, Cypress 0--Catcher Melissa Jantz hit a sixth-inning, one-run triple for El Dorado (14-4, 4-1) at home. Cypress is 7-13, 2-3.

In the Freeway League:

Sunny Hills 4, Troy 1--Sophomore center fielder Kelly Ward went two for three, scored three runs and stole three bases to bring her total to 18 steals for Sunny Hills (13-6, 3-2) at Troy (1-4 in league play).

In the Garden Grove League:

Garden Grove 6, Bolsa Grande 0--Stephanie Smith (14-7) pitched a two-hitter, striking out 11, for Garden Grove (15-8, 8-1) at Bolsa Grande. Andrea Handley had three RBIs and Trina Padan had two hits and an RBI for Garden Grove.

Kennedy 7, La Quinta 3--Stephanie Hill went three for three including a double. Pitcher Cheryl Longeway went two for four with two RBIs and got the victory with four strikeouts for the Fighting Irish (14-4, 8-1). Kara Henderickson hit a three-run homer in the first for La Quinta (6-3 in league play).

Los Amigos 2, Pacifica 0--Alison Campbell pitched a no-hitter for the Lobos (5-6 in league play) at Los Amigos. The Lobos took a 1-0 lead in the first as Renee Hernandez scored on an error. Hernandez drove in the second run with a sacrifice fly.

In the Orange League:

Valencia 4, Western 3 (11 innings)--Rosana Garcia singled and then scored when the left fielder misplayed the ball for a three-base error to give Valencia (8-11, 3-2) the victory at Western. Garcia and Dannette Davis each had two hits. Davis also had an RBI.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Beach 9, Costa Mesa 4--Terra Anderson went two for two with four RBIs for Laguna Beach (10-9, 2-3) at home. Costa Mesa is 0-5 in league play.

Laguna Hills 12, Orange 0 (5 innings)--Carolyn Langfield had three hits and three RBIs and Crissy Bulicz had two hits, including a solo homer, and three RBIs for the Hawks (14-6, 3-2) at Laguna Hills. Margo Melendrez pitched a one-hitter, striking out three.

Woodbridge 5, Trabuco Hills 0--First baseman Alisha Nelson doubled and scored on Kim Johnson’s sacrifice fly to give Woodbridge (12-7, 5-0) a 1-0 lead in the fifth and put the Warriors alone in first place. Trabuco Hills is 4-1 in league play.

Woodbridge broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning in which Nelson hit a bases-loaded single to drive in two runs. Lisa Wehren (9-4) pitched her fifth shutout of the season.

In the Sunrise League:

Connelly 10 Sacred Heart 0 (5 innings)--Santina Dalligatta (6-2) pitched a no-hitter, striking out 10, for host Connelly. Dalligatta had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs.
