“The Big Wave,” a 42-foot arch over Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica by artist Tony DeLap of Costa Mesa, will be inaugurated June 25 at 5 p.m. The steel piece, selected as the winning sculpture in a competition sponsored by the Santa Monica Arts Commission and Department of General Services, crosses Wilshire at Franklin Street. Events will include a drive-by concert cruise, “Traffic Jam,” produced by Arthur Frick and Friends. Cruisers will rendezvous at 4:30 at beach parking lot 2030 off Appian Way (south of Pico Boulevard) and will drive down a 30-block span under “The Wave” in the company of more than 200 hot rods, low-riders and other vehicles, passing 10 curbside musical groups. These musicians will play in sync with a radio score on station KPCC.
