Israeli troops shot to death a leading activist of the Palestinian uprising in the occupied Gaza Strip on a day of mass protests in which 21 Palestinians were wounded, witnesses and hospital officials said. Ismail abu Jayad, 27, of the Deir al Balah refugee camp, was shot twice in the head at close range during a clash between troops and rock-throwing demonstrators and was dead on arrival at Shifa Hospital, doctors said. Abu Jayad’s relatives said he led the outlawed Shabiba youth movement at Gaza’s Islamic University. There have been frequent clashes in Gaza since Aug. 18, when Palestinians were forced to produce magnetic identity cards to enter Israel proper and leaders of the uprising responded by ordering a boycott of work in the Jewish state.
