A man was critically injured Sunday when he was run over by a train while lying on railroad tracks in Pacoima, Los Angeles police said.
The accident occurred shortly after 9 p.m. near Paxton Street and San Fernando Road, said Sgt. Harold Hall.
The engineer of the southbound Southern Pacific train told police that he spotted the young man lying in the tracks but was unable to stop. The engineer said that the man attempted to roll off the tracks, but his right leg was severed by the train, Hall said.
The victim, who police had not identified, was taken by emergency helicopter to UCLA Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition.
