A 34-year-old woman who teaches at the University of California in Santa Barbara won the Carnegie Hall International American Music Competition for Violinists on Sunday. Michelle Makarski, 34, a native of White Pine, Mich., receives $10,000, a contract with New World Records, a Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and an appearance at Carnegie Hall during the 1990-91 season with the American Symphony, for which Anthony Davis will compose a piece of violin music.
