World IN BRIEF : CHINA : Nixon Reports to President on Trip

Former President Richard M. Nixon reportedly urged President Bush to restore friendly relations with China despite Beijing’s brutal crackdown on pro-democracy advocates in June. Nixon spent two hours at the White House on Sunday evening reporting on his talks with Chinese leaders last week. Bush suspended military sales to China and barred high-level diplomatic contacts with Beijing after the crackdown. After the meeting with Nixon, a White House spokesman indicated that the Administration is not ready to change its stance toward China.
