California IN BRIEF : SACRAMENTO : 47 in Legislature Seek Court Review

More than a third of the 120-member Legislature urged Gov. George Deukmejian to seek a state Supreme Court review of a ruling that permits minors to get abortions without the consent of their parents. Forty-seven lawmakers signed a letter asking the governor to direct state attorneys to appeal the 1st District Appellate Court decision. The ruling let stand an injunction--approved in San Francisco Superior Court--that barred the enforcement of a state law requiring parental consent for minors to get abortions. Assemblyman Phil Wyman (R-Tehachapi) asked legislators to support a review after state Atty. Gen. John K. Van de Kamp refused to appeal the appellate court’s decision.
