A jury rejected a murder charge Tuesday against an El Cajon man but found him guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of his girlfriend’s 17-month-old boy.
Benjamin Chloupek, 26, appeared relieved when he heard the not-guilty verdict to second-degree murder, but held his face in his hands when he heard himself declared guilty of manslaughter.
The jury also found Chloupek guilty of child abuse and inflicting corporal injuries on the victim, Jeffrie Brown. Chloupek was found not guilty of committing a lewd act and sexual battery on the boy.
