BOYS’ PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Masked Man’s 25 Points Lead Ocean View Past L.A. Jefferson

TIMES STAFF WRITER

Three weeks ago, Ocean View High School got the 1989-90 basketball season off to a less-than-rousing start when guard Ryan Martin broke his nose and Coach Jim Harris’ son, Jim Jr., broke his foot within a week.

But Ocean View looked healthy Tuesday night when the Seahawks rolled to an 85-57 victory over Los Angeles Jefferson in the opening round of the Tournament of Champions in Huntington Beach.

Martin scored 25 points to lead Ocean View to its fifth consecutive victory. He made nine of 15 shots, including three three-pointers. Center Marcel TenBerge added 14 points and 10 rebounds as the Seahawks advance to Thursday’s quarterfinals against Morningside.

“Ryan has been wearing a mask since he broke his nose,” Coach Jim Harris said. “This was the first time we’ve shot the ball outside, and I thought we looked pretty good. We’re going to have to be good from this point on. We may be in over our heads from here on out.”

Ocean View opened a 38-15 lead with 3:25 remaining in the second quarter when Martin made two three-pointers in a row, but the Seahawks saw most of their big lead disappear in the third quarter.

Ocean View made only 2 of 11 free-throw attempts in the third quarter and Jefferson (2-2) moved to within 10 points going into the last quarter. Ocean View responded by scoring 28 points in the quarter.

“We missed a lot of free throws (16), but then we’re playing a lot of inexperienced kids,” Harris said. “Right now, we’re right where I thought we would be. We’re going to be good by the time our league starts, but I’m not sure we’re ready for Morningside.”

Ocean View’s top player, Greg Evans, had an off-night. The guard, who has signed to play at Loyola Marymount, made only 4 of 14 shots and misfired on six three-point attempts.
