From Times Staff and Wire Reports
The chief medical examiner’s office in New York City will start testing for the AIDS virus during autopsies in an attempt to stem the epidemic of the deadly disease, a spokeswoman said. Beginning in the next several weeks, friends or family members of the deceased will be warned when the test for the human immunodeficiency virus is positive, but the information otherwise will be confidential, she said. The office expects to find 1,000 to 2,000 people a year who died of causes unrelated to HIV and carried the virus without knowing it.
