Running back Anthony Thompson of Indiana won the Maxwell Award as the outstanding college football player of the year, beating out Heisman Trophy winner Andre Ware of Houston.
Thompson received 1,398 points, including 273 first-place votes. Ware had more first-place votes--286--but only 1,245 points. First-place votes are worth three points, second-place two and third one.
West Virginia quarterback Major Harris was third, followed by Penn State running back Blair Thomas, Notre Dame quarterback Tony Rice and Air Force quarterback Dee Dowis.
