WORLD IN BRIEF : MIDEAST : Israel Bought Iran Oil, U.S. Confirms

The U.S. State Department confirmed that Israel purchased Iranian oil as part of a reported effort to win the release of three Israeli soldiers being held by pro-Iranian forces in Lebanon. State Department spokeswoman Margaret Tutwiler said Israel informed the United States of the oil deal a month ago. She added that “foreign countries do not seek U.S. approval for oil purchases from a third country.” NBC News disclosed the oil transaction, saying Israel paid Iran $36 million.
