A five-alarm fire in an Oakland apartment building early Saturday sent 10 people to East Bay hospitals, two of the victims suffering burns, the others smoke inhalation, authorities said. Oakland police estimated the damage to the three-story building at 40th Street and Telegraph Avenue at more than $150,000. The alert was received at 2:26 a.m. and declared under control about 45 minutes later. Oakland Fire Chief Godwin Taylor said the fire started on the second floor, spreading to the attic. Three occupants had to be rescued with ladders, he said. Firefighters managed to rescue some wrapped Christmas presents as well. The bottom floor of the building is occupied by businesses, the two upper floors by apartments.
