Desormeaux’s Total Hits 588

LAUREL, Md. — Axspect provided record-setting jockey Kent Desormeaux with his 588th victory of the year and fourth of the day Wednesday in the $20,000 Ta Wee Purse at Laurel Race Course.

Axspect inched away from Diane’s Girl in the final yards to win by a nose in 1:18 2/5 for 6 1/2 furlongs.

Reyri’s Song finished another half-length back in third.

Axspect paid $5, $3.60 and $2.20 as the favorite in a field of seven fillies and mares.

Diane’s Girl returned $3.80 and $2.60; Reyri’s Song $2.40.

Desormeaux must average three winners per day over the final four days of the year to reach his goal of 600 winners in 1989.
