CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : MERCED : Man Gets 90 Days in Death of Stayner
- Share via
Antonio Loera, who accidentally killed childhood kidnap victim Steven Stayner in a traffic crash, was sentenced to 90 days in jail, despite a plea by an attorney for Stayner’s widow that Loera should get the maximum four-year sentence. Merced County Superior Court Judge George Barrett also placed Loera on 12-months probation and ordered him to pay $100 to a restitution fund. Stayner, 24, was a second-grader when a child molester kidnaped him and held him for seven years. He fled his abductor as a teen-ager after the man kidnaped another youngster whom Stayner led to freedom. Stayner was killed Sept. 16 when he was riding his motorcycle without a helmet and plowed into Loera’s stalled car.
