GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Yoshioka Has 21 Points to Pace El Toro, 71-61

Karie Yoshioka had 21 points to lead El Toro High School to a 71-61 victory over visiting Mission Viejo in a South Coast League girls’ basketball game Thursday.
Yoshioka added 11 assists, seven steals and six rebounds. El Toro (13-4 overall, 3-0 in league play) also received help from Tracy Heiser and Sara Bone, who each had 14 points, and Megan Rehwoldt, who had 13.
Mission Viejo’s Jennifer Rohrig had a game-high 24 points and teammate Carie Burt had 19.
In the Century League:
Villa Park 55, Santa Ana 40--Evonne Caouette and Mickey Trollinger each had 12 points for host Villa Park (2-8, 1-2). Teammate Jeanette Yahiro scored 10. Gracie Lopez had 21 points for Santa Ana (7-9, 0-3).
Foothill 65, Canyon 27--Sandi Rasmussen had 13 points and Melissa Wielandt 12 to lead Foothill (8-8, 3-0). Dee Moore scored 12 for Canyon (6-5, 1-2).
Santa Ana Valley 66, El Modena 61--Nilda Valdez scored 21 to lead host Santa Ana Valley (9-6, 3-0). Brenda Robinson added 19 and Francesca Rumps 18 for Santa Ana Valley.
In the Empire League:
Esperanza 61, El Dorado 42--Jennifer Harney had 29 points, 11 rebounds and six assists to lead host Esperanza (12-3, 3-0). Kim Kordik had 19 points for Esperanza. Theresa Korte had 14 points, including three three-pointers, to lead El Dorado (6-7, 1-2).
In the Freeway League:
Fullerton 69, Troy 40--Jenny Costock had 23 points and Sommer McClane added 17 to lead host Fullerton (10-4, 2-0).
In the Olympic League:
Santa Margarita 54, Ontario Christian 28--Sophomore guard Kristen Mulligan scored 19 to lead host Santa Margarita (8-6, 3-2). Sarah Witte added 11 for Santa Margarita.
Whittier Christian 50, Orange Lutheran 42--Whittier Christian converted 22 free throws at Orange Lutheran (2-9, 1-4). Becky Pearson had 15 points for Orange Lutheran.
In the Orange League:
Brea-Olinda 96, Western 38--Jinelle Williams had 27 points and Tammy Blackburn 15 to lead Brea (16-0) at Western. Brea has 38 consecutive victories.
Valencia 81, Anaheim 18--Sig Lo had 15 points to lead host Valencia (7-8, 2-0). Hollie Keeton had 14 points for Valencia.
Savanna 63, Magnolia 25--Carrie Frederick scored 22 points and had 10 rebounds and eight assists to lead visiting Savanna (11-5, 2-0). Teammate Stacey Aliff added 16 points, including three three-pointers. Jackie Boxley added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Rebels.
In the Pacific Coast League:
Trabuco Hills 54, Laguna Hills 51 (OT)--Dee Dee Sampson made a 22-footer as time ran out in overtime to break a 51-51 tie for host Trabuco Hills. The score was tied, 24-24, at the half and 45-45 at the end of regulation.
Shelly Calhoun scored 24 points for Trabuco Hills (6-8, 1-1). Dionne Martin scored 13 to pace Laguna Hills. Jackie Rhodes added eight points off the bench, including two three-pointers in overtime for the Hawks.
Costa Mesa 56, Laguna Beach 14--Olivia DiCamilli had 20 points and Rachel Ward 18 for Costa Mesa (7-8, 1-1).
In the Sea View League:
Saddleback 46, Corona del Mar 29--Janet Chacon had 16 points and Andrea Long 11 to lead host Saddleback (7-7, 2-0). Point guard Priscilla Sarmiento added eight assists, six steals and six points for the Roadrunners. Molly Flint scored 16 for Corona del Mar.
Tustin 64, Newport Harbor 45--Christine Garner had 22 points and 10 rebounds for host Tustin. Wanda Sequeira added 13 points and 13 assists for Tustin (13-5, 2-0). Stacy Giem had 19 points and Joanne Hall added 12 for Newport Harbor (5-8, 1-1).
University 63, Estancia 56--Senior forward Denise Gandara had 29 points and 10 rebounds for host University (11-4, 1-1). Gandara made three three-pointers. Tara Wolff added 15 points for University, which led, 46-37, to start the fourth quarter. Estancia never got closer than five points the rest of the way.
In the Sunset League:
Edison 55, Fountain Valley 52--Edison (11-3, 1-1) got 20 points from Debbie Fischer and Melanie Iwamasa added 14. Julie Workman had 14 points and Shanna Wilson, Heather Stanke and Jennifer Barbaro 10 each for Fountain Valley (10-7, 0-2).
Marina 72, Huntington Beach 52--Melisa Sortino had 35 points, including five three-pointers, and six assists to lead host Marina (13-4, 2-0). Clare Walker had 16 points for Huntington Beach (6-8, 1-1).
Ocean View 63, Westminster 17--Fabiola Nunez had 14 points for visiting Ocean View (17-1, 2-0). Ocean View took a 27-6 lead.
In nonleague girls’ basketball:
Cornerstone 29, Calvary Chapel 21--Freshman guard Rebekah Lewis had 12 points for host Calvary Chapel (2-8). Calvary Chapel trailed, 15-2, at the end of the first quarter. Sunshine McFarland had six blocked shots for Calvary Chapel.
