TENNIS ROUNDUP : Lendl, Becker Score Decisive 2nd-Round Wins

Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia, the world’s top-ranked player, posted an easy 6-4, 6-2 win over Goran Ivanisevic of Yugoslavia Thursday to advance to the third round of the South Wales Open at Sydney, Australia.

Boris Becker of West Germany, the Wimbledon and U.S. Open champion, also advanced with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Australian Wally Masur. He will face compatriot Carl-Uwe Steeb, a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 winner over France’s Jean Fleurian, in the third round.

On the women’s side, American Amy Frazier led a group of upset winners with a 6-3, 6-4 win over second-seeded Jana Novotna of Czechoslovakia. Top-seeded Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia also lost, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3, to unheralded compatriot Radka Zrubakova.

American Jimmy Arias beat compatriot Glenn Layendecker, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, and advanced to the quarterfinals of the New Zealand Open in Auckland.

In other second-round action, Soviet Andrei Chesnokov, Canadian Grant Connell and New Zealand veteran Steven Guy all advanced.

Austrian Thomas Muster outlasted Australian Darren Cahill, 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 6-2 in the Rio Challenge tournament at Adelaide, Australia. In the second match, Henri Leconte of France rebounded from an opening-night loss to John McEnroe and beat American Jim Courier, 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 6-4.
