Steinlager 2 of New Zealand led the way as 22 yachts left Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., for Southhampton, England, on the last leg of the 32,932 nautical-mile Whitbread ‘Round the World Race.
An estimated 3,000 spectators gathered on the shore and on pleasure craft to watch the noon start, and the custom-designed boats unfurled spinnakers to make the most of 15-knot winds.
