Sierra Madre : Trash Fees Increased
A trash collection rate increase of 4.7% was granted Tuesday to Western Waste Industries by the City Council.
The price increase, which takes effect in July, means that the $9.83 monthly fee previously charged homeowners for curb service will be increased to $10.25. Commercial users face similar price increases based on the number of bins they use.
The council balked, however, at extending Western Waste’s contract for a full five years. Instead, the council left in place the remaining four years on the contract and approved creation of a task force to analyze the city’s waste flow in order to determine if the Western Waste contract is equitable.
The city also amended the contract to allow for rate reductions if Western Waste saves money through its recycling efforts.
