Playa del Rey : Park for Disabled Planned

Los Angeles city parks officials voted Monday to allow the builders of a proposed condominium project near Dockweiler State Beach to develop a half-acre public park for the handicapped.
Westport-Playa Sol Ltd. will build the park as part of a proposed expansion of the Westport Beach Club Villas on Vista del Mar. The park, to be built on a vacant city-owned lot on Pacific Avenue, will be about a quarter of a mile from the condominiums.
The state Coastal Commission, which reviews all coastal development, has required Westport-Playa Sol to provide public facilities as part of the expansion, which adds 48 condominiums to an existing 36-unit complex. The developer decided to provide facilities for the handicapped at the city’s request.
Under the plan approved Monday, the park will include a picnic area, playground equipment, a parking lot, a fitness course and a paved walkway to the beach for wheelchairs. It will be built and paid for by Westport-Playa Sol but operated by the city.
Barbara Bullard, a spokeswoman for the developers, said work on the park is expected to begin in several months.
