Varian Associates Inc.: The Palo Alto-based computer, instruments and electronics company reported a third-quarter loss of $34.1 million, contrasted with a profit of $9 million a year ago. Sales were up 13% to $344 million. Varian, which is reorganizing, said the loss was the result of $31.9 million in restructuring charges and $15.2 million in charges for discontinuing some operations.
