American Airlines Drops Surcharge Plan: American Airlines, unable to get competitors to follow its lead, dropped a plan to add surcharges on fares beginning Aug. 1 at five domestic airports. The surcharge, ranging from $1 to $4 a ticket, would have affected passengers starting flights at Florida’s Palm Beach and Ft. Myers airports, at New Orleans, at New York’s La Guardia airport and at Newark, N.J. The carrier, based at the Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport, had planned to tack on the surcharges to recover what it will be paying in higher operating costs at the airports.
