NATION : Mrs. Quayle Had Hysterectomy

WASHINGTON — Marilyn Quayle underwent a hysterectomy last weekend to correct a pre-cancerous condition, the vice president’s office announced today.
In a release announcing that the vice president’s wife, who will be 41 July 29, had been released from the National Naval Medical Center, press secretary David Beckwith said the major surgical procedure to remove her uterus was performed Saturday morning after “severe dysplasia” was revealed by two abnormal Pap smears.
“She is rapidly recovering from surgery and will continue recuperation,” Beckwith said. “Because of early detection, due to excellent work of the cytologists at the National Naval Medical Center, Mrs. Quayle is expected to have a full and complete recovery.”
The vice president’s office over the weekend refused to describe her surgery other than to say it was gynecological.
