3 County Golfers Qualify in U.S. Junior

DALY CITY, Calif. — Dennis Hillman of Rye, N.Y., shot a 3-over-par 75 Wednesday to take medalist honors for the 36 holes of qualifying for the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Lake Merced Golf and Country Club.
Hillman was low qualifier by two strokes over Chris Dauk of Akron, Ohio, and Lee McEntee, of Doylestown, Pa.
Tiger Woods, of Cypress, shot a 77 for a two-day total of 154. The cut for the top 64 players was 165.
Also making the cut were Laguna Niguel’s Scott Richardson, who shot an 81 for a 157 total, and Albert Oh, of Orange, who had an 81 for a 164.
Competition continues today for the 64 qualifiers with two rounds of match play. The championship final is scheduled Saturday.
Brian Waggoner of Old Hickory, Tenn., and Steve Burdick, of Rocklin, Calif., each shot 75 to lead after the first day of stroke play but both slipped to 83 Wednesday.
Also safely in the field at 162 is Chris Riley, of San Diego, who was is the top returning player from a year ago. He advanced to the semifinals last year.
