ALBUM REVIEWS : **** 1/2 GERRY MULLIGAN “Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band” Verve Compact Jazz
- Share via
Here are two versions of one extraordinary big band--trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, tenorist Zoot Sims and trumpeter Clark Terry are among the collective personnel--as recorded in performance in New York and Europe in 1960. This stuff wears wonderfully: the charts are examples of high craftsmanship, embracing both ensemble and soloist. On Al Cohn’s “Lady Chatterley’s Mother,” soloists like Brookmeyer and Terry cook hard while dodging punchy band shouts that dart in and out of the proceedings. “Come Rain or Come Shine” and Johnny Mandel’s “Theme From ‘I Want to Live’ ” are tableaux for Mulligan’s moody side, and Zoot Sims romps gleefully on the percolating “Apple Core.”
