WORLD IN BRIEF : EUROPE : 5-Nation Alliance Meets for 1st Time

Five European countries meeting for the first time as a regional alliance agreed to step up political and economic cooperation to promote stability on the Continent. The leaders of Italy, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary and Yugoslavia reached a wide range of accords aimed at spurring economic development in Eastern and Central Europe. The agreements came at the first summit of the so-called Pentagonal Initiative, formed last November.
