SANTA BARBARA — UC Santa Barbara has received approval from the NCAA to make the move from Division III to Division II in football in the fall of 1991, Athletic Director John Kasser announced Friday.
Coached by Rick Candaele, UCSB is entering its fifth year as an intercollegiate program. In four previous years, all in Division III, the Gauchos have gone 4-5, 8-2, 6-4 and 8-2.
This year, in their final season as a Division III team, the Gauchos will play a schedule made up mostly of Division II opponents.
The Gauchos will remain a nonscholarship program when they move to Division II.
“I’m glad that this has finally happened,” Kasser said. “This will officially put us at the level we’ve been playing at for a couple of years.”
