Facility for Nonviolent Offenders Draws Protest

Studio City residents told a city planning official Monday that they dread seeing a retirement home converted into a work-furlough facility for nonviolent lawbreakers, despite assurances that inmates would be carefully monitored.
“I can’t help but feel that despite what has been said, these people will be a threat to the community,” Jean Ferdman said.
About 20 residents and business leaders attended a hearing Monday to debate turning the Ventura Retirement Villa into a county work-furlough facility for convicted drunk drivers, forgers and other nonviolent offenders. A recommendation on the proposal is to be made to the Planning Commission next month.
