NATION : Car Kills Man, 81, in Wheelchair

NEW YORK — An 81-year-old man trying to cross the New England Thruway in his wheelchair was struck and killed by a car, police said today.
Bernardo Hernandez died at Jacobi Hospital early today about two hours after he was hit, authorities said.
Police said the accident occurred when Hernandez, heading south against traffic, was struck by a 1988 Mercury. The driver of the car was not charged in the incident.
