Here’s a Guide to Cruises With Culinary Conscience

The growing demand for good food at sea is reflected in the number of culinary theme cruises offered by several lines. A sampling of upcoming excursions:
Norwegian Cruise Lines: Dec. 1-8, the Norway will assume its former identity, that of the legendary liner, the France, for a weeklong Caribbean cruise where 34 Michelin-starred chefs will cook. In addition, there will be cooking classes, lectures on food, and wine workshops. Fares: $2,830 to $6,400 per person, double. Call (800) 327-7030.
Royal Viking Line: Offers several culinary and wine cruises each year aboard the Royal Viking Sun, Royal Viking Sea and Royal Viking Sky. Chefs, vintners and food and wine writers are featured. Two cruises are scheduled--Oct. 20 to Nov. 3 and Nov. 3-17. Fares: $4,995 to $15,075 per person, double.
From Nov. 8 to Dec. 4, Indian cuisine will be spotlighted on cruises in the Indian Ocean on the Royal Viking Sea; Nov. 8 to Dec. 4, wine expert Melvin Master will lecture on the Royal Viking Sky in the Pacific. Cunard Line: Sea Goddess I & II will host Food & Wine magazine’s choices of America’s 10 Best New Chefs on 10 separate sailings next year. Such chefs as Jose Gutierrez of The Peabody hotel in Memphis, Tenn., prepare meals on board and give informal cooking demonstrations. Fares range from $5,100 to $7,900 per person, double.
