SHORT TAKES : Soviet Violinist Pavel Berman Wins Gold, Carnegie Hall Date

INDIANAPOLIS — Soviet Pavel Berman won the gold medal at the International Violin Competition on Sunday, earning a Carnegie Hall debut and $22,000.

Berman, 20, is the son of Soviet pianist Lazar Berman. The Moscow native also won a European management contract, more than 50 recital engagements with major North American orchestras and a gold watch.

“You play from heart to heart in Russia. You speak from your heart and soul,” Berman said. The first-place finish “is my chance, my chance to make my career. But it is also my opportunity to get better and better.”

Second-place honors went to Marco Rizzi of Italy. He won $16,000. Ivan Chan of the United States won third-place and $10,000. Virginie Robilliard of France placed fourth, David Kim of the United States was fifth and Martin Beaver of Canada was sixth.
