Cates Gets the Dean’s Cap: Producer-director Gilbert Cates has been named dean of UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television. Cates will serve the school as its chief administrator and as a professor with joint appointments in the Theater/Film and Television departments. He is expected to assume his new post no later than April 1 of next year. Cates, who was nominated for an Emmy for producing this year’s Academy Awards, was appointed last week by Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences President Karl Malden to helm next year’s ceremony.
