Getting there: Japan Air Lines flies daily from Los Angeles to Tokyo. The round-trip coach fare is $1,748.
From Tokyo, the fastest way to get to Miyajima is to hop on the Shinkansen Bullet Train. Trains depart Tokyo Station for Hiroshima several times an hour for the 4 1/2-hour trip. The one-way economy fare is about $133, and the one-way first-class fare is about $184.
From Hiroshima, take the train from the Hiroshima Station to the Miyajima-Guchi Station, a 25-minute trip. Cost is $2.90. From the Miyajima-Guchi Station, it is only a two-minute, well-marked walk to the Miyajima ferry, which departs frequently on the 10-minute trip to the island. Cost is $1.30.
Where to stay: Deluxe accommodations in Hiroshima include the Hiroshima Grand Hotel (telephone: 011-81-82-227-1313 or fax: 011-81-82-227-6462), with doubles from $150 including tax.
Moderate accommodations in a typical Japanese-style inn are available at the Minshuku Ikedaya, from $45 double. Call 011-81-82-231-3329.
Not all inns in Japan accept foreign travelers, so it’s wise to check in advance. The Kamefuku Inn accepts international visitors, but as with all Japanese-style inns, this could change. The rate at the Kamefuku, a lovely little country hotel, starts at $225 plus tax for two people, including meals. Call 011-81-82-944-2111.
