California Still Leads in Food: California remained the top U.S. agricultural producer in 1989, with $17.6 billion in gross sales, the state Department of Food and Agriculture said, up 6% over 1988. Texas was second ($10.7 billion), followed by Iowa ($9.1 billion) and Nebraska ($8.6 billion). The agency said dairy products led the sales parade. Grapes were second, followed by cattle, cotton and nursery products. Exports accounted for about $4 billion, or 23%, of the state’s farm product sales.
