The San Diego State Aztecs women’s volleyball team was invited to the 32-team NCAA Tournament for the ninth time in the 10 years of the event. The 19th-ranked Aztecs (23-11) will play Friday night in the first round of West Regional at Brigham Young. SDSU is the No. 6 seed in the West. Eleventh-ranked BYU (26-7) is the No. 3 seed.
SDSU has had its troubles against BYU, losing at home to the Cougars in five games and getting swept at Provo, Utah. If the Aztecs win, they will play Dec. 7 in the regional semifinals at a site yet to be determined.
The Aztecs’ best tournament results were in 1981 and 1982 when they were third.
The other seeds in the West are: No. 1 UCLA (31-1), No. 2 Stanford (25-3), No. 4 New Mexico (21-6), No. 5 Pepperdine (25-5), No. 7 Wyoming (19-9) and No. 8 Gonzaga (21-6).
