THE SIDELINES : Bobby Witt Signs With Rangers

ARLINGTON, Texas —  Bobby Witt signed a multi-year contract with the Texas Rangers today.

Details of the contract weren’t disclosed, but the deal is believed to be worth about $6 million over three seasons.

Witt was 17-10 with a 3.36 ERA in 1990. He led the team in victories, complete games (7) and innings (222) while compiling the lowest ERA among starters (3.36).

In another signing, Mariano Duncan agreed on a one-year contract with the Reds. Duncan had asked for $1.1 million in arbitration last week, with the Reds offering $750,000. They split the difference Wednesday, agreeing on a $925,000 salary for 1991.

Also, Calvin Schiraldi won a salary increase from the San Diego Padres despite struggling as a starter and in the bullpen last season. The right-hander avoided arbitration by signing a one-year deal worth $740,000. Schiraldi earned $600,000 last season. He made 42 appearances, including eight starts, and finished 3-8 with a 4.41 earned run average and one save.
