COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Filson’s 12th-Inning Double Lifts UCI

Matt Filson had a run-scoring double in the 12th inning to give UC Irvine a 6-5 victory over Cal State Northridge in a nonconference baseball game Sunday at Irvine.
Joe Furukawa opened the 12th with a single and Filson followed with his double off losing pitcher Todd Denhart (1-1), who faced only the two batters.
Ken Kendrena, a junior right-hander from Cypress College, started for Northridge (22-10). He had 17 strikeouts and no walks in 11 innings.
Northridge scored in the ninth on an RBI double by Craig Clayton, a junior from Loara High School, to take a 5-3 lead, but the Anteaters rallied to tie.
Chris Facione, a pinch-hitter, had a run-scoring triple to make the score 5-4. Furukawa, who had four hits, followed with a sacrifice fly to score Facione with the tying run.
Mike Rood (1-1) picked up the victory for Irvine.
In the Bakersfield softball tournament:
Portland 4, Chapman 0--Portland had nine hits in the third-place game. Chapman (27-5) had defeated UC Riverside, 2-1, in eight innings, and Cal State Dominguez Hills, 5-1, earlier in the day.
In the victory over Riverside, Trina Honea had a two-run double in the eighth inning. Honea and Rose Conner each had three hits in the victory over Dominguez Hills.
In nonconference women’s tennis:
Cal State Fullerton 5, Colorado 4--Caroline Sporer and Tracy Spellman won at No. 2 doubles in the deciding match for Fullerton (7-10) at the Anaheim Tennis Center.
Sporer and Spellman won, 7-6, 6-7, 7-5, over Angie Moore and Renee Marshall. Colorado is 11-7.
