An arson fire destroyed an abandoned house in Hillcrest and caused the temporary evacuation of about 50 people from an apartment building next door, San Diego fire officials said.
The fire, at 11:18 p.m. Saturday at 1707 Essex St., caused an estimated $50,000 damage to the house, $3,000 to the apartment building and $1,500 to three cars parked nearby, firefighters said.
It also charred two palm trees and overhead electrical lines, fire officials said.
One firefighter hurt a knee fighting the two-alarm fire that took several hours to put out, officials said. The firefighter, who was not identified, was treated at Mercy Hospital, officials said.
Another fire Sunday afternoon in Pacific Beach caused an estimated $35,000 damage to a house at 2162 Grand Ave., officials said. No one was hurt.
An electrical short in the attic of the house sparked the blaze, officials said.
