Police on Wednesday were on the lookout for a crime ring that may be responsible for more than a dozen commercial burglaries near the John Wayne Airport.
Newport Beach Police Sgt. Andy Gonis said 18 early evening break-ins have been reported since May 13.
“We think that most of them may be related,” Gonis said. He declined to elaborate, citing an ongoing investigation.
The burglars have stolen items ranging from laser printers and other computer components to miscellaneous office equipment such as electronic calculators, Gonis said.
Gonis said business owners should take extra precautions when closing at night and should record serial numbers on all valuable equipment.
“Business owners should be a little more alert,” Gonis said. “They should think about things like additional lighting in doorways.”
He also urged owners to call police if they see suspicious-looking people carrying bulky items from offices or loitering near complexes.
The department has increased patrols in the area, he said.
