The city of Los Angeles and the UNOCAL Corp. will sponsor a household hazardous waste cleanup Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at UNOCAL’s Wilmington refinery, 1660 W. Anaheim St. in Los Angeles.
The program is aimed at allowing safe disposal of unused household, automotive and garden items such as paint, motor oil, pesticides and cleaning solvents.
The waste cleanup is one of several collection days sponsored by the city throughout the year. Since the program was introduced last year, about 300 55-gallon drums of hazardous materials have been collected and either recycled or safely discarded, officials said. The city spent more than $3 million collecting such items from an estimated 17,000 households, the officials said.
For further information, residents are encouraged to call the Los Angeles Board of Public Works at 237-1634.
