Michael Stanewich, the San Diego County sheriff’s deputy, shot and killed July 3 while attempting to rob an Encinitas home, had no drugs or alcohol in his system, according to preliminary results of a toxicology test.

Stanewich, 36, was killed by a colleague from the Encinitas sheriff’s station during the robbery attempt.

The Sheriff’s Department also announced Thursday that evidence gathered at Stanewich’s Mira Mesa home during a search last week turned up “powders and vegetable matter” that were not drugs. Dan Greenblat, a special assistant to Sheriff Jim Roache, said the materials were baking powder and oregano.

The investigation is continuing, he said.
