LIMA, Peru — At least 11 people were killed and 40 injured when a strong earthquake flattened most of the homes in a village near volcanoes in southern Peru, civil defense officials said Wednesday.
The Tuesday quake, between 4 and 5 magnitude, hit hardest in the village of Maca, which last year was threatened by an eruption of the nearby Sabancaya volcano.
An undetermined number of residents may also be missing in Maca, a community of 1,500 people nestled in the Andes in the Arequipa region.
