PRO FOOTBALL : DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Wise Explains Why He Left Camp

Defensive end Mike Wise, who left the Raiders without permission July 12, returned to practice and said he had resolved the personal problems that led to his departure.
Wise, a reserve, said he became despondent over his grandfather’s serious illness and could not cope with football at the time.
“I’m OK now,” he said. “It just took me a while to deal with the frustration. It had nothing to do with the team. But when someone close to you is dying. . . . “
Wise said he was wrong to leave training camp without informing Coach Art Shell.
“All I can do is apologize and pick up where I left off,” he said.
To make room for Wise on the roster, the Raiders released defensive end Greg Mark.
Coach George Seifert of the San Francisco 49ers said he doesn’t expect his starters to play much more than a quarter against the Raiders in Saturday’s exhibition game at the Coliseum.
Quarterback Joe Montana, who will start, apparently has recovered fully from a broken bone in his throwing hand, suffered in last January’s NFC title game loss to the New York Giants. “I have not noticed it to be a problem,” Seifert said.
