‘Wrong Message’ Sent

The Coastal Commission’s approval-after-the-fact of Gladstone’s illegal expansion (Times, July 21) sends the wrong message to merchants and to the public about how serious Californians are about protecting our coastline. I remember the enactment of the Coastal Act as being a victory for environmentalists and coastal residents--but apparently its provisions are waived if the government “needs” the profits generated from the clearly illegal activity. And putting Gladstone’s, which in the past has disregarded its own promises to the commission, in charge of monitoring public parking usage seems particularly foolish.
I hope our enforcement efforts in Santa Monica are more meaningful to the public relying on them.
