Conferees Agree on Funds for Dam, River Projects

A House and Senate conference committee agreed Tuesday to spend $1.6 million for the long-awaited Hansen Dam restoration and $1 million for recreational projects at the Los Angeles River.
Committee members agreed to a 1992 spending bill that designates $1.65 million to complete planning and design of a master plan to revitalize the Hansen Dam Recreation Area in the northeast San Fernando Valley as well as to begin construction of a $10-million, 15-acre swimming lake. The bill must go back to each House for approval before going to President Bush.
The $1-million Los Angeles River study will assess potential recreation, transportation and water conservation uses. Mayor Tom Bradley hopes to transform the river--which is used for flood control--into a greenbelt with bike paths and riding trails.
