GOOD REFERENCES: When Thomas F. Riley was deciding whether to accept then-Gov. Ronald Reagan’s appointment to the Board of Supervisors in 1974, his first call for advice was to James Roosevelt, his former war buddy who died Tuesday (A1). . . . “I hadn’t even asked a question and he said the answer is ‘yes,’ ” Riley recalled. . . . Turns out, Roosevelt had already urged Reagan to pick Riley.
