Help for Young Musicians: The Herb Alpert Foundation has come to the rescue of the financially troubled Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute, the summer training program for young musicians, by pledging a matching grant of $150,000 ($50,000 a year for three years). Last week, Philharmonic managing director Ernest Fleischmann appealed to an audience at the Hollywood Bowl to help the Institute, which was founded 10 years ago. Fleischmann said that $250,000 must be raised by Oct. 31 if the program is to survive. Under the grant agreement, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Assn. must raise an additional $200,000 by Oct. 31 in order for the Alpert Foundation to give an additional $50,000 for each of the next two years.
