COUNTYWIDE : College District OKs $65.6-Million Budget

The Ventura County Community College District Board of Trustees has approved a $65.6-million budget, slightly larger than originally anticipated, for the 30,000-student district.
The budget for the fiscal year that began July 1 reflects a 3.6% increase over last year’s budget, but still calls for cutbacks.
Officials said the district will have to be frugal because prices of materials it buys have increased by more than the 3.6% and because of increases in employee salaries.
“We expect (this) to be a very difficult year,” Chancellor Thomas Lakin told trustees Tuesday evening. “A prospect of a financial bonanza does not exist. We have to be careful not to lead the district into some form of bankruptcy.”
The district’s budget includes $11.3 million for Oxnard College, $22.9 million for Ventura College and $21.4 million for Moorpark College.
“The budget is lean,” said Ray DiGuilio, acting vice president of administrative services at Ventura College. “But we can get through this.”
