James F. Cowan, Ventura County superintendent of schools, received the Distinguished Humanitarian Service Award on Tuesday from the county Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith.
Cowan was given the award “in recognition of his contribution to the community both as an individual and as a professional in disseminating the democratic ideals of tolerance, equality and brotherhood among all the faiths,” said Sol Robin, a member of the league. Cowan, who has been superintendent since 1969, was honored at a reception at the Camarillo Community Center.
More than 2,000 workers in the county’s educational system and members of B’nai B’rith were invited, Robin said.
