Accusations of robbery and gang rape Tuesday started out the preliminary hearing for a 27-year-old man accused of going on a three-week crime rampage earlier this year that left one victim dead.
Calvin Lamott Cooper is charged with murder and 32 other crimes, including rape, sodomy and oral copulation. He is being held at County Jail in lieu of $2 million bail.
The first witness at the hearing was a Riverside County woman who testified that she had driven to San Diego in August to attend a concert by Christian rock singer Amy Grant.
The woman said she and her male friend were accosted in a Midway-area hotel room by Cooper and two accomplices after the show. Besides being robbed, the woman testified that she was raped by all three men.
Cooper is also charged with the slaying of a Taco Bell employee. Santos Nuno, 33, was shot in the back of the head while begging for his life, according to police reports.
The preliminary hearing is expected to last through Thursday.
